This German surname of QUAST is of two-fold origin. It was a locational name meaning 'one who came from QUAST' (the place overgrown with twigs) the name of two places in Germany; it was also an occupational name, one who worked at the baths with twig. The name is also spelt QUASTEL, QUASTLE and QUASTLER.

This is what happens when I get bored at work...I google the origins of my last name.
